But also plenty strong enough are two other joints Chris tried out in classroom settings: the bridle joint (slightly easier/faster), then the half-lap joint (easier/faster still). So 5/8” is how much it’s bumped out; 1/2” isn’t quite enough for my backsaws to hang straight down (but that could vary depending on your saws). Not surprised someone grabbed this one so quickly, such beautiful work, Megan! More than a technical book about craft (though there is a popular project in there), it is a study on minimalism (or what Schwarz calls aesthetic anarchism) applied to handtool-centric woodwork. Now chop chop! And the argument for handmade objects over cheap, poorly made furniture rings true for me.Paper - LOVE IT. If you are into using hand tools, this is a great book.at once an essential instructory text for the woodworking beginner and an impassioned treatise against particle board scrap and its discontents. It really appealed to my engineering sensibilities.

Good to know it has now been officially sanctioned. Hand-cut blah blah blah. I do go about the shop gathering tools and again to put them away, I don’t like it either. It seems the mentality is hey, if I’m gonna keep my lie nielsens in their scabbard and use power tools, they better be nice power tools.Sorry folks, the Shakers would have used electric tools had they been available at the time.Would they have used CNC? I grant this book may not resonate with all the way it resonated with me. DISCLAIMER: Any posts on LJ are posted by individuals acting in their own right and do not necessarily reflect the views of LJ. This summer I plan to build my tool chest, probably Dutch which is more open and simple than the English version. The detailed explanation of the tool chest design and construction, while beyond my current skill level, was very clear.

I’m interested in finding the line between modern convenience and traditional hand tools. If we can justify using a table saw, band saw, or a Domino, why would we object to CNC to shortcut our process? You bet. Christopher's wit and wisdom is second to none. Perhaps I'm channeling Enzo Mari here, a designer and author I read on CS's recommendation. But when I’m in production mode, I’m no monk. I recommend this for all skill levels for the following reasons:This was an interesting book.

I'm hoping to get into woodworking, and I figured I should learn what tools to get first. I have a question about the backsaw hanging set up. Because of this great service to the craft, we can forgive him of all his quirks. An excellent intro to the why of hand tool craft and expression rejecting the pointless materialism found in modern furniture. It probably depends where you are standing as an amateur wood worker when you start reading this book. And in that journey, I think we learn that power tools are not necessarily better in process, just faster in procedure.Chris, Roy Underhill, and the Woodsmith crew all have mad skills; and have demonstrated that with hand powered tools and tools powered by tortured electrons (well maybe not Roy, or a driver-drill at home?). Those familiar with Schwarz's many books, articles and DVDs will know all-too-well that he is cantankerous, opinionated and deeply idiosyncratic. Pretty new to woodworking, I mostly sew...Looking at the box and contents, I believe I could carry it. Much faster and just as strong.

I loved it anyway, because the way he describes his process was fun to read on its own. Though our dust collection is good, it’s not good enough to clear all the dust from the mortise bottoms. With the mortises all cut, do a dry assembly before opening the glue.Once everything fits together, cut a 30° bevel on the top edges of the lid (or just soften the edges, per the book) before glue-up.Arrange the rails (the long pieces) with the mortises facing up, and squeeze in a healthy amount of glue, spread it all around and up the mortise sides with an acid brush, then stick the loose tenons in place.
